Atsushi Maki

Main career

Mr. Maki joined the Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd. in 1990, and has been involved in research and development of the initial concepts of currently used technologies, such as optical brain function measurement technology (optical topography) and vein authentication, based on research on biometric measurement using light. He has conducted brain function measurements in France and Italy to clarify language acquisition in newborns, and discovered that brain activity in response to the first language (native language) is observed within a few days of birth, using optical topography. In 2010, he started social application of knowledge and education based on the characteristics of brain development and cognitive functions at the New Business Development Division of the same company. He devised and built a business model to increase the mental value and actually industrialized it.

Main research achievements (as of 2021)

Scientific papers: 7000 citations, h-Index 40, i10-index 90

Awards R&D100, Nakayama Award, Okochi Memorial Award (Grand Prize), National Commendation for Invention, 21st Century Frontier Award, Commendation from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Good Design Award, Frontier Design Award, Teiichi Yamazaki Award (Measurement Division), etc.
