On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, the 3rd Academic Entrepreneurs’ Cafe – Medical-Industrial Collaboration: Sudden Encounter – was held at TIP (TMDU Innovation Park), Yushima Campus, Tokyo Medical and Dental University.
Many students, researchers, and supporters from GTIE participating universities gathered at the venue, and many continued to actively interact with each other after the event.
The Academic Entrepreneurs’ Cafe was started as a series of events to provide an opportunity to casually interact with researchers and their supporters who are challenging start-ups to implement their research results in society.
The third event, titled “Medical-Industrial Collaboration: Sudden Encounter,” was held at TMDU Innovation PARK (TIP), an innovation hub of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, a GTIE participating institution, outside of the Tokyo Tech Tamachi Campus.
The guests were three engineering researchers, Dr. Yoshikazu Nakajima (Tokyo Medical and Dental University), Dr. Shinji Ikeuchi (Tokyo Medical and Dental University), and Dr. Kotaro Tadano (Tokyo Institute of Technology), who are working to solve medical issues based on their research results through medical-engineering collaboration.
The event started with a talk session in which the three guests introduced themselves and spoke passionately about their past efforts in medical-industrial collaboration and what they wanted to share with the participants.
In the panel discussion that followed, we heard passionate talks about how the university balances research and business, with the ability to contribute to society through research results being the motivation and engine.
The panelists also discussed the dilemma of the “improvement phase that does not result in papers” in the commercialization process, and the need for universities and research institutions to properly evaluate results that do not easily result in papers or presentations at academic conferences.
The talk session and panel discussion will be streamed online at a later date. If you were unfortunately unable to attend this year’s event and would like to listen to the talks again, please watch the videos!
The next Academic Entrepreneurs’ Cafe will be held on Wednesday, December 13, from 3:00 p.m. at Tokyo Tech’s Tamachi Campus.
Finally, we would like to thank all the GTIE officials and speakers for their efforts in organizing the event, all the researchers who provided valuable input during the planning stages, and everyone who helped make this event possible.
