GTIE is a platform that fosters an ecosystem centered on university startups within the Greater Tokyo Area’s startup ecosystem. With approximately 20 participating universities, it works to create startups based on university research findings and to cultivate entrepreneurial talent.
In the 2025 edition of the “Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2025,” Tokyo ranked 11th globally, positioning the Greater Tokyo Area as a globally significant ecosystem—the largest in Japan.
Furthermore, while the Greater Tokyo Area constitutes a single large ecosystem, it also contains multiple attractive sub-ecosystems within it, each with distinct characteristics.Among these, universities serving as hubs for university startups in the four areas of “Tsukuba,” “Kanagawa,” “Chiba,” and “Tama” held discussions with universities, entrepreneurs, investors, and financial institution representatives—who form the core of their respective local ecosystems—to explore collaboration with overseas ecosystems, further revitalize each area’s startup ecosystem, and promote the overall development of GTIE.
